Premier Coin Galleries - Information On Silver Peace Dollars

The last silver dollar coin created for circulation in the United States, the Peace Silver Dollar, was also the first silver dollar minted since 1904; and was minted for a short period of time compared to other coins minted in America.

1. Designer

The Peace Silver Dollar was designed by Anthony de Francisci; its name was applied because the word “peace” was printed below the eagle on the reverse side of the coin.

2. Minted Dates

The Peace Silver Dollar first entered production in 1921. After production ceased in 1928, the coin was reintroduced from 1934 to 1935.

3. Minting Locations

Identify the minting location by letter: “D” means the coin was minted in Denver, Colorado; “S” means San Francisco, California; and no letter means Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

4. Rarest Varieties

A small number of 1921 Peace Silver Dollars were printed and immediately sealed to prevent circulation. In 2006, these coins were valued up to $50,000 each.

5. Fun Fact

The Peace Silver Dollar was minted again in 1965 with the date of the coin appearing as 1964; however, all coins of this series were melted down before they entered circulation.
